Bolivia declares state of emergency over El Nino weather pattern
Published Nov 1, 2026
According to Al Jazeera – Breaking News, World News and Video from Al Jazeera, the Bolivian government has officially implemented a nationwide state of emergency to address the ongoing consequences of the El Nino climate pattern. President Rodrigo Paz signed a decree on Saturday intended to expedite the allocation of resources and authorize the deployment of emergency response teams to regions currently struggling with severe flooding and drought conditions.
Official reports indicate that the environmental crisis has already impacted approximately 78,000 families across six of the nation's nine departments. Additionally, the agricultural sector has suffered significant losses, with over 75,000 cattle reported dead as a result of the extreme weather. Officials warn that the situation remains precarious, particularly given the country's historical vulnerability to deadly flooding events, such as those that occurred in Santa Cruz late last year.
Global experts and the World Meteorological Organization suggest that this particular El Nino cycle may reach record-breaking intensity before it peaks in late 2026. While the phenomenon is a natural occurrence, its current progression is expected to cause widespread volatility in rainfall and wind patterns, potentially persisting into 2027. Projections suggest that the global impact could be severe, with disproportionate risks to the world's most vulnerable populations.
