Ukrainian evacuees reunite with family after years trapped in Russia-occupied city
Published Oct 31, 2026

According to BBC News, residents of the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky have successfully evacuated to the Ukrainian region of Chernihiv following a brokered ceasefire. The evacuation, which involved a complex journey through Russia and Belarus, allowed families to reunite after being separated for years. Many of those who arrived were in poor physical health, having spent long periods without basic necessities like food, water, or electricity, forcing some to consume garden weeds to stay alive.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky credited US First Lady Melania Trump for her assistance in securing the ceasefire that enabled the operation. The effort involved coordination between Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart, Yana Lantratova. While hundreds of civilians were transported via a bus convoy, some residents chose to remain in Oleshky, where Russian officials have promised to provide humanitarian aid to those who stayed behind.
The evacuation was necessitated by years of severe conditions and dangerous, mined escape routes in the frontline city. While the ceasefire provided a temporary window for safe passage, the broader conflict continues, with ongoing reports of attacks on energy infrastructure and military targets. Authorities have pledged to provide necessary support and assistance to the evacuees as they work to rebuild their lives after leaving their homes.
