Shops looted as German cost of living protests turn violent
Published Nov 1, 2026

According to BBC News, mass demonstrations organized by the group Gen Z regelt took place across several German cities on Saturday to protest issues such as the rising cost of living, school underfunding, and potential military conscription. While the daytime events were largely peaceful, with approximately 18,000 participants recorded by authorities, the situation escalated into violence after dark in cities including Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg.
In Frankfurt, police reported that rioters looted commercial properties, smashed windows—including those of a gun shop—and attacked emergency personnel with fireworks, stones, bottles, and molotov cocktails. Law enforcement utilized water cannons to manage the crowds, leading to numerous arrests. Roman Poseck, the interior minister for Hesse state, stated that around 100 individuals linked to left-wing extremism had infiltrated the protest, later characterizing the violent conclusion to the demonstrations as disgraceful.
The protests in Germany coincide with widespread, youth-led demonstrations occurring across France. Spokesperson Lina Friedrich emphasized that the movement seeks improvements to health and education systems and advocates for a more equitable distribution of financial burdens, rather than military involvement or coercion.
