Swedish PM Kristersson resigns after election loss

According to BBC News, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has announced his resignation following a narrow defeat in the nation's general election. Preliminary results indicate that the centre-left opposition, led by Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson, is positioned to secure 176 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag. In contrast, Kristersson’s right-wing bloc, which included the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, is projected to hold 173 seats.

Kristersson formally requested to be relieved of his duties to allow the parliamentary speaker to begin the process of identifying a new leader. While the Social Democrats have historically been a dominant force in Swedish politics, Andersson faces a complex path toward forming a coalition. She must negotiate with the Left, Centre, and Green parties, and potential disagreements over policies like taxation could prolong the process, which has historically taken several weeks or months in previous election cycles.

The election results, which saw a thin margin of roughly 50,000 votes between the two major blocs, are expected to be formally certified by the end of the week. Although Kristersson had previously promised to offer cabinet positions to the Sweden Democrats, the party experienced a decline in support for the first time since 2010. Andersson has stated that the public has opted for a new direction, though the Speaker of the Riksdag will now facilitate the discussions necessary to determine the makeup of the next government.
