Ninth woman's body found as South African police investigate string of deaths

According to BBC News, South African police are investigating the discovery of a ninth female victim found in the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg. The latest body was located Thursday morning in Dawn Park, appearing partially clothed and showing signs of physical trauma. This marks the ninth such discovery since mid-July, involving various locations across the urban region, including Kempton Park and KwaThema. While some victims have been identified—such as Elizabeth Moselakgomo, Itumeleng Kekana, and Dineo Evelyn Motapane—others remain unidentified as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials have assembled a multidisciplinary team to determine if these deaths are linked or if a group is responsible, though they have stopped short of confirming the presence of a serial killer. Authorities are currently pursuing a person of interest and have offered a 400,000 rand reward for information leading to arrests. President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the violence, and police are urging women in the region to exercise heightened vigilance, recommending they avoid walking alone or using isolated routes until the perpetrators are apprehended.

The string of deaths has prompted widespread fear among local residents, intensifying long-standing concerns regarding South Africa’s high rates of gender-based violence. While officials like Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia have cautioned against speculating that the incidents are connected, the government remains under pressure to address what has become a recurring safety crisis.
