Third person dies from malaria in cluster near Germany’s Frankfurt Airport

German officials have characterized this as a highly unusual outbreak linked to air travel. The most recent fatality was a resident of the Schwanheim district, located near the airport, who had not traveled to any regions where the disease is endemic nor worked at the facility.

Health authorities believe the infections, caused by the *Plasmodium falciparum* parasite, occurred after mosquitoes were transported into the country via aircraft or luggage. This follows an incident in July where six airport employees contracted malaria tropica, resulting in two previous deaths. While malaria is not transmitted through human contact, it is spread by certain mosquito species, prompting local officials to advise medical professionals to remain vigilant for symptoms among patients in the area.

In response to the situation, airport operator Fraport has deployed mosquito traps for laboratory testing, though findings have not yet been released. Meanwhile, public health departments have encouraged both airport staff and local residents to seek immediate care if they experience symptoms such as fever, chills, or respiratory issues. Officials also noted that they maintain the authority to mandate that airlines disinfect their planes to prevent further spread.
