According to Al Jazeera – Breaking News, World News and Video from Al Jazeera, the United States government has successfully facilitated the release of Adam Castillo, a U.S. citizen who was held in Myanmar for three months. A group of American officials visited the capital city of Naypyidaw recently to discuss the situation with local authorities, ultimately resulting in the former Marine being placed into U.S. custody and transported to Bangkok, Thailand.
Myanmar state media indicated that the decision to release the 40-year-old businessman was made in light of the cordial ties between the two nations. Castillo, who served as the president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar, had been facing allegations of breach of trust and financial impropriety, claims he has denied. He was initially detained at Yangon International Airport in June after traveling back from Malaysia.
Representatives from the nonprofit Global Reach, which assisted the family in their advocacy efforts, expressed appreciation for the U.S. administration's role in the case. Castillo’s sister noted that while the family is relieved he is returning home, the situation remains complicated due to her brother's long-standing professional and personal ties to the region.
